Aggstein castle

Aggstein castle

Description

Aggstein Castle was built in the early 12th century. It is located on a hill (480 meters above sea level) on the banks of the Danube in the picturesque Wachau countryside. The oldest part of the castle that has survived to the present times are the foundations for the so-called the small castle, while the vast majority of preserved fragments come from the 15th century, when the castle was rebuilt by Jörg Scheck von Wald, burgrave Steyr. The last reconstruction of the castle took place at the beginning of the 18th century, after which the castle fell into ruin and was partially demolished.
